Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State has lost the three Senatorial zones to the opposition party in Saturday’s National Assembly election. President Umaru Musa Yar’Aua’s daughter, Hajiya Maryam, was not as she also lost to the opposition for the House of Representatives, Katsina Federal Constituency position. She had been fielded by the PDP to replace her ailing husband, Hon Badamasi Kabir Usman, who has been unable to contest due to health problems.
The state has Katsina Central, North and South senatorial zones which had been politically dominated by the ruling PDP, but was won by the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) at the weekend.Senator Ibrahim Ida (Katsina Central Senatorial Zone) lost to Ahmed Sani Stores, Senator Kanti Bello (Daura Senatorial zone) lost to Senator Abdu Yandoma, while Senator Abu Ibrahim won Funtua Senatorial zone.
Senator Ibrahim won by 324,652 votes to defeat Tukur Jikamshi of the PDP who garnered 198,127 votes for the runner-up position. Jikamshi was former deputy to the late President Yar’Adua when he was state governor during his first tenure from 1999 to 2003. Sani Ahmed Stores defeated Senator Ida with 217,154 votes; lda got 188,302 votes as runner-up.
Maryam Yar’Adua was defeated by CPC’s Moh’d Tukur Abba Sada, with 45,573 to 26,573 votes. At press time, details of the Katsina North senatorial zone were yet to be issued to the public, but in a press release by INEC, signed by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mohammed Musa Sokoto indicated that the zone was won by the CPC. Senator Kanti Bello of the PDP is Senate majority Chief Whip. He lost to Senator Abdu Yandoma in the zone.
For the House of Representatives positions, the CPC won 12 of the 15 constituencies, while the PDP got two seats, including Zango/Baure and Musawa/Matazu, where Hon. Nasiru Zango and Hon. Danlami Garba were returned respectively. (NAN)
