Lagos – The National President, Arewa Youth Forum (AYF), Alhaji Yerima Shettima on Friday in Lagos urged the Federal Government to strengthen its security agencies in a bid to combat the rising wave of crime in the country.
Speaking against the backdrop of bombings by Boko Haram sect in some parts of the country, he noted that the security agencies needed more sophisticated weapons than those at the disposal of criminals.
“Our security agents need to be adequately equipped with modern weapons to curtail the activities of criminals and those disturbing the peace of the nation.
“Also, the security agents should be retrained on the latest technology and weapons.
“The welfare of the security personnel should be given urgent attention so that they can have the passion for their job,’’ Shettima said.
The forum’s president stressed the need for the authorities to provide physical protection for all residents of the country.
Shettima also advised the government to take a critical look at its recruitment policy for security personnel, saying “many of those recruited took the jobs because of unemployment.
“Government should try as much as possible to recruit people that have passion for the job to enable them give their best to the nation.
“Security is vital to the growth and development of the nation and security agents are the ones that will provide the much-needed peace for the economy to grow,’’ he added.
Shettima, who condemned the activities of Boko Haram sect, urged the government to clamp down on the fanatics to curtail their bloody exploits.
